Which aspect ratio to render, and why it matters

Almost every question about video formats comes down to one thing: where it will be watched. 9:16 fills a phone screen in a feed and gets cropped to a square thumbnail in most previews. 1:1 survives everywhere and wastes screen on nothing. 16:9 is the only ratio that looks right embedded on a page or on a television, and it looks tiny in a vertical feed. 4:5 is the compromise for image-led feeds: taller than square, not so tall it gets letterboxed.

The mistake that costs the most time is picking one ratio and stretching it into the others. Padding gives you black bars, and a centre crop cuts the subject in half. Recompose instead: reframe on the subject, move the captions into the new safe area, and render each ratio from the same source rather than from the finished file.

Safe areas: the part of the frame you cannot use

Every platform paints its own interface over your video. Usernames, captions, buttons and progress bars sit in the top and bottom of a vertical frame, so anything you put there is either covered or unreadable. The practical rule is to keep text and faces inside the middle two-thirds, and to check on a real phone rather than in the editor.

Burned-in captions make this worse if you position them once and reuse them across ratios. Caption placement belongs to the ratio, not to the video.

Rendering the same story in several formats

The affordable way to produce a vertical cut, a square cut and a horizontal cut is to describe the video once and render it three times. That is what a JSON-to-video workflow does: the scenes, text, timing and audio are data, and the ratio is a setting. Change the ratio, get a new render, no second edit.

Where the video type actually changes something

Most differences between a promo, a tutorial, a testimonial and a slideshow are in the script, not in the technique. A tutorial needs the steps visible and the pace slow enough to follow. A testimonial lives or dies on the audio, so captions are not optional. A slideshow needs a rhythm: the same duration per image reads as a screensaver, varying it reads as editing. A promo needs the payoff in the first seconds.
